Human values are not mere verbal expressions. They originate from the heart. - Baba

Many people undertake Sadhana (spiritual exercises) in order to realise Divinity. But if they don't understand human qualities, all the efforts become exercises in futility. Without learning the alphabets, how can one pick up the meaning and usage of words, phrases and sentences? Human Values are the basic alphabets of spirituality. Develop human values and unflinching faith in the Divine. Master this and your Sadhana will be effective. You should also understand that there is no pleasure without pain and pain is only an interval between two pleasures. Whenever you have an unpleasant experience you should have the firm faith that it is for something good that you will be enjoying in the near future; and therefore stop worrying.

人類價值不光是在嘴邊說說,而是來自內心。

很多人修行以求悟道,但是他們若不瞭解人的性質,則所有努力都是枉然。不學字母,如何了解和使用字、片語和句子?人類價值(真理、義、平靜、愛、非暴力)是靈性人生的基本字母,要培養人類價值和對上帝堅定不移的信心,精通於此,你的修行就會有成效。另外還要了解,世間的快樂,沒有完全不帶痛苦的,痛苦只是兩陣快樂中間的那段光陰。每當你有不愉快的經驗時,都要堅信,那是有好處的,在不久的將來你就會享受到,所以,停止去憂慮。

All are one, be alike to every one - Baba

God is within you in the form of conscience; follow your conscience. Some do not do so because of their attachment to the body. You have been endowed with the precious gift of the body with the sense organs to discharge your duties in the world and to do Sathkarma (good deeds). Always do things that are acceptable to God. Just as the same electric current passes through all electric gadgets of various types and sizes, so also Atma (Divine Self) is common in all beings. Stars are many, sky is one; cows are of many colours, milk is white; jewels are many, gold is one; beings are many, breath is one; countries are many, earth is one. Make efforts to comprehend that Oneness, the unity in diversity.

眾生一體,要一視同仁。

上帝以良心的形式存在於你內部,要跟隨你的良心。有些人並不這樣做,這是因為他們對自己身體的執著。上天賦予你一副身體和各個感覺器官,這是寶貴的禮物,用來盡你在人世間的職責和做好事。所做所為,總是要讓上帝能接受。就像電流流過各式各樣的電器,阿特曼(自性、佛性)也普現於眾生之內。星星有很多,天空只有一個;乳牛有各種顏色,但牛奶都是白色;珠寶有多種,但其中的黃金則一;生物有多種,呼吸則一;國家很多,地球則一。要下功夫去明瞭這個一元性、這個分殊萬象中的統一性。

True love is pure, free from pride, and is full of bliss. - Baba

Sath means God. You should have the company of God or proximity to God (sathsang). Chith is awareness. The combination of Sath and Chith gives Ananda (divine bliss). It is said that the essence of all scriptures is paropakaraya punyaya, papaya parapeedanam. We generally think paropakara means helping others. But here Para means God, upa means near, and kara means do or make efforts. The import is that you should make efforts to be near God. papaya parapeedanam means to see the many in One is sin. Therefore you have to see the One in many, or unity in diversity.

真愛純潔無瑕,不帶一絲驕傲,並充滿極樂。

Sath意為「神」,你應該以神為伴,亦即親近神(sathsang)。Chith是「覺知」,結合SathChith,就得到Ananda(神性極樂)。據說,一切經典的精髓都在下面這句話︰”paropakaraya punyaya, papaya parapeedanam”。一般都認為,paropakara意指助人,但此處para意指神。upa意思是「近」,kara則意指「去做」或「下功夫」。所以整個字的涵義是︰要下功夫去親近神。papaya parapeedanam意指︰在「一」中見到「多」是罪過也,你要在「多」中見到「一」,亦即,在「異(萬象)」中見到「同(統一)」。

All work is God’s; He inspires, He helps, He executes, He enjoys, He pleases Himself. - Baba

The correct thing to do is to perceive the Atma (Divine Self) in each and everyone, and help ever and hurt never. See Divinity in all and do sacred activities. If you are unable to help, atleast do no harm. Being bound to the world with attachment to worldly objects is the wrong path. Instead take the positive approach of turning towards Divinity. The difference lies only in turning your mind. Turn to the world, you get bound; turn to God, you get liberated. God is without birth and death, and is an eternal witness; you must strive hard to earn the love of God. One who receives the love of God will earn the love of all. If you realise that Love is God, you will not get attached to worldly things.

一切你所成就的事,都是上帝之功,是祂在促使、激勵,祂幫助、祂執行、祂享受、祂讓自己高興。

要覺察到阿特曼(神性、真我)在每個人內部,並且永遠助人,絕不傷人,這樣做才對,在眾生身上見到上帝,並做神聖的事。如果你幫不上什麼忙,至少不要傷害。被這世間綁住,執著世間之物,是走錯了路。朝上帝走去,方為正路。二者的差別,僅在於一轉念之間,心念朝向世間,你就被繫縛;朝向上帝,就得解脫。上帝不生不滅,是永恆的見證者,你一定要努力贏得上帝的愛,得到上帝的愛的人,能得到所有眾生的愛。若能明白愛是上帝,你就不會對世俗之事物生起執著。

Life is a game, play it. - Baba

In a game of football, the players on either side continue to kick the ball till it is sent to the goal. They must see to it that the ball does not go beyond the two posts that define the goal. The goal of life too consists of two posts: secular and spiritual. You are born as a human with the goal of not being born again. You must live within the frames of secular and spiritual pursuits. The six bad qualities — lust, anger, greed, desire, pride and jealousy are on one side, and the good qualities — truth, right conduct, peace, love, nonviolence and sacrifice are on the other side. The game is between these two teams. If you tread along the divine path you can experience peace, and also share it with others. Then you will be liberated.

人生是一場比賽(遊戲),去玩它。

在足球賽裡,兩邊的球員不停的踢球,直到球踢進目標球門為止,他們必須小心不讓球超過兩根門柱之外。人生的目標也是由兩根柱子形成︰世俗的和心靈的。你投胎為人,目標是不再輪迴,你必須活在世俗和心靈兩者形成的框框之間。比賽的兩隊,一邊是六種壞品德︰慾、嗔、貪、欲望、驕傲、嫉妒,另一邊則是好品德︰真、義、平靜、愛、非暴力、奉獻。如果你朝著神聖的路線前進,你會體驗到平靜,並能和他人分享,然後你就能獲得解脫。

Love is the only solvent for the hardest of hearts. - Baba

In this world, there is no power greater than Prema, pure selfless love. All the yogas (paths) mentioned in the Bhagawat Gita such as Jnana (knowledge), Karma (action), etc., are contained in Bhakthi Yoga (path of pure love towards God). There is nothing beyond this. Each and every yoga contains an element of selfishness. But that of Prema, is free from selfishness and all other impurities. It is only because of the absence of such selfless love that chaos, conflicts and confusion are prevalent in the world today. One who is interested in the welfare of humanity should practise this principle of true love.

愛,是最鐵石的心腸唯一的溶劑。

在這世上,沒有比prema──純潔無私的愛──更大的力量,所有《薄伽梵歌》裡提到的瑜伽(法門),像是般若智慧瑜伽(法門)、行動瑜伽(法門)等等,都已經包含在Bhakti Yoga(虔誠瑜伽、誠瑜伽、奉愛瑜伽︰對上帝純潔的愛)裡面,沒有東西超過它。每一種瑜伽法門都帶有一點自私的成份,但是Prema的瑜伽法門不含自私或任何其他不純淨的成份。就是因為缺少這種無私的愛,今天這世界才會充滿混亂、衝突、混淆。關心人類福祉的人,應該奉行實踐這個真愛之道。

Chant the name of God day in and day out. That alone will protect you at all times. - Baba

People may act as they please, but they cannot escape from the consequences of their actions; be it a simpleton or a great person. Let no one be under the illusion that one can commit sin and go scot-free. Wherever you go, the results of your actions will follow you like your shadow. God is always by your side saying “Tathastu! Tathastu!” (so shall it be!). People do not take cognisance of this truth and indulge in wicked deeds. Despite knowing pretty well what is good and what is bad, many struggle to give up their evil ways. You may do a number of good actions, yet you cannot escape from the consequences of your past deeds. Bear this truth always in mind. To avoid unpleasant consequences, always enquire before undertaking any activity whether it is good or bad. But you may wonder, if there is any way to escape from the consequences of karma (action s). Yes, it is possible for those who earn the grace of God.

唸唱神的名號,從早到晚,它能時時保佑你。

人們可以隨其喜歡而行動,然而他們無法逃避自己行為的後果,愚人或大人物都一樣。造了罪業而又能安然無恙的逃脫,希望沒有人抱持這種錯覺。不論你到哪兒,業報都會如影隨形。上帝總是與你站在同一邊,說︰「好,那就這樣!」人們不去察覺這一點,而儘幹壞事。許多人雖然明知何為善何為惡,卻還是在掙扎,難以捨棄自己的惡行。你也許有一些善行,但你還是逃脫不了過去所造的業。這個真理要永遠銘記在心。欲避免令自己不愉快的果,在行動之前,總是先問問自己,那行動是好還是壞。但你也許會想,有沒有辦法可以逃脫因果業報?有,對於得到神的恩典的人,那是可能的。

As long as man regards himself as the doer and enjoyer he cannot escape from the consequences of his actions - Baba

The game of life is a cosmic play that God is enacting. The actors, the dialogues, the cues and the songs have all been assembled by Him. He is the cast, the director, and the audience. In the epic Mahabharata, He filled one side with boundless material strength, but they were urged on by unrighteous greed, while the other side were ever-righteous and had the with strength of the Atma which apparently seemed limited. In the cosmic confrontation and conflict between these two, the Lord stood forth as the arbiter who brought about the victory of right over might. The core lessons contained in the Gita are these — the seeker must surrender, with the feeling Karishye vachanam thava (Your word shall be obeyed), and must at all times fulfill one's duty. Again, in the Gita Lord declares, Swadharme nidhanam sreyah (In fulfilling the duty assigned to you lies your safety and prosperity).

只要人認為自己才是「做事者」和「享其成果者」,那他就無法逃脫自己的行動所帶來的果報。

人生這場遊戲,是一場上帝導演的宇宙大戲,演員、對白、給演員的暗示、音樂,都是由祂湊成的,祂是演員陣容、是導演,也是觀眾。在印度史詩《摩訶婆羅多》裡,對於一邊人馬,祂分配豐富無比的物質資源,但這些人為貪婪與不義所驅使。而另一邊的人馬,則始終合乎義,並具有阿特曼(真我、神性、自性)的力量──然則表面上看起來他們力量有限。在這場雙方宇宙大對決中,上主站在仲裁者的位置,讓正義壓倒強權而得勝。《薄伽梵歌》的核心教導是︰求道者必須抱著「爾之所言,吾等當遵從之。」的心態全然皈依,並要時時克盡自己的職責──在《薄伽梵歌》裡,上主還聲稱:「盡汝職責,平安昌盛自在其中矣。」

God judges the devotee's love by the intensity of the feeling and not by the number of ways in which worship is offered. - Baba

True devotion is not bound by rituals or set procedures. The Gita talks about various offerings like patram (leaf), pushpam (flower), phalam (fruit), and toyam (water). These words should not be taken literally. The human body is the leaf that must be offered to the Lord. Like the leaf of the tree, the body too would one day die and decay; no one can say when that will happen. Before such a fate befalls, the body in its fullness, freshness, and purity, ought to be offered to the Lord. The flower of your heart is what would please the Lord most and not the ones purchased from the market, which fade in a few hours. The flower of the heart, that is totally pure, soaked in love, and perfect does not wither easily. And which fruit would please God? He is not interested in fruits that grow on a tree; Mind is the fruit that must be offered to th e Lord. Lastly, the water the Lord wants from you is the tears of joy that flow when your heart is full of love for Him. These alone are the offerings that the Lord expects when you worship Him.

神以信徒心中感受的強弱,來判定信徒的愛,而不是看膜拜方式的多寡。

真虔誠不局限於儀式或程序,《薄伽梵歌》裡提到各式各樣的供品,像是葉子、花、果、水。這些字不該直接按照字面意思解讀。人體是要供奉給神的葉,就像樹葉,人體有一天也會死亡衰敗,沒有人能預測那何時會發生,我們得在那一刻來臨之前,將這個完整、新鮮、純淨的身體供奉給主。你的心花才是能讓主高興的東西,而非市場買來的花──那幾小時就凋謝了。心花,完全純潔清淨,浸泡在愛中,完美無缺,是不容易凋謝的。能取悅神的水果又是哪一種呢?祂對樹上長出的果實不感興趣。心念是必須供奉給神的水果。最後,神要的水,是當你心中充滿對祂的愛時,所流出的喜悅的眼淚。這些才是主所期待的供品。

I have come to light the lamp of Love in your hearts, to see that it shines day by day with added luster. - Baba

I have a "Task": To foster all mankind and ensure for all of them lives full of bliss (ananda). I have a "Vow": To lead all who stray away from the straight path again into goodness and save them. I am attached to a "work" that I love: To remove the sufferings of the poor and grant them what they lack. I have a "reason to be proud", for I rescue all who worship and adore me, aright. I have my definition of the "devotion" I expect: Those devoted to me have to treat joy and grief, gain and loss, with equal fortitude. I will not give up my mission, nor my determination. I will never give up those who attach themselves to me.

On this day 71 years ago Baba as a fourteen year old boy declared, “I am Sai Baba”. Later in a landmark letter to His elder brother, He clearly delineated His mission. The above is an extract from that letter written in May 25, 1947.

 

我來人間,點亮你們心中那盞愛之燈,讓它的光輝與日俱增。 

71年前的今天,巴巴宣告︰「我是賽.巴巴。」(譯者按︰沙迪亞.賽.巴巴就是舍地.賽.巴巴的轉世。)當時他只有14歲。稍後,在一封寫給他哥哥的歷史性家書中,巴巴清清楚楚的勾勒出他的使命。以下就是摘錄自那封1947 5 25日的信:

我有一件「任務」︰養護全人類,確保他們都活在至樂中。我有一個「誓願」:拯救所有那些偏離正軌的人,引導他們回歸善道。我執著於一項自己心愛的「工作」︰消除窮人的苦難,賜予他們所缺少的東西。我有個「驕傲的理由」︰因為我拯救所有膜拜和崇敬我的人──以正確方式。我有我對「虔誠」的定義︰我期待那些虔誠信我的人,能以平常心看待樂與悲、得與失,堅忍剛毅,不屈不撓。我不會放棄我的使命,我的決心不會變,那些依歸我的人,我絕不放棄他們。
