Do everything as dedicated to Him, as directed by Him, as work for His adoration or for serving His children. - Baba

The relationship between the worker and the employer should be like that between the heart and the body. Both are bound intimately with each other; they depend on each other for their very existence. Love and affection have to govern the relationship between the two, not hatred or envy. Work in the spirit of love; it will lead you to worship. That is to say, work without any regard to the proportion of benefit you derive from it. Work, since it is your duty; work since you love to work, since that is the way you can offer God the gratitude for the skills endowed upon you. This kind of work leads you to wisdom, which is the recognition of the Divine in every being. May the New Year grant you mental peace and may your life's ideal of self-realisation be fulfilled. May all comforts and contentment be added unto you. This is My blessing.

2012/01/02

Consider and perform all your acts as worship. Whatever happens, accept it gladly as His handiwork, a sign of His compassion. - Baba

You may wonder why liberated ones (Jnanis) should still do Karma (action). Well, people usually follow the ideal set by those in higher levels. Their acts form the basis of Right Conduct (Dharma). If Jnanis are inactive, how are ordinary mortals to save themselves? They will have no guide and will lose themselves in the easy paths of sensory pleasures. The duty of the wise is to foster the right and practice it before others, so that they too may be prompted to follow, drawn by the hope of becoming as contented and as joyful as the jnanis. The wise have to do and get done, see and show, so that the rest might be persuaded to follow the example set by them. The sun and the moon carry on their routine tasks; wind and fire have to perform their duties without demur. Hence, each one should perform one’s task w ithout fail and with care.

將你所有行動都當作膜拜。不論發生何事,欣然接受,視之為祂的手工藝,象徵祂的慈悲。

你也許會心想,已經斷了輪迴的智者為何還要從事行動?這個啊,是因為那些境界高的人所定下的理想,人們通常會去遵循,他們的行為形成了「正法(Dharma︰義)」的基礎,若智者們不活動,凡人們怎麼救自己?那他們會沒有指引,會迷失在感官逸樂這種好走的路子。智者們的職責,是養「義」,並身體力行給人看,讓別人也想效法,希望也能像智者們那般滿足、那般快樂。智者們必須去做、去完成,去看和給人看他,好說服其他人,以他們為典範。

A disciplined life is the best offering you can make to the country or to the Divine in you. - Baba

Many children are wayward and vile today, since they have no other examples to follow. Unfortunately, parents, teachers and leaders are inflaming the passions of young minds and encouraging them onto inappropriate actions. Along with Bala Vikas, elders too must experience Vikas (flowering or development), and lead exemplary lives of simplicity, sincerity, and steady spiritual discipline. Children do not say one thing and do the opposite. They are very straight forward and innocent. Everyone should imbibe this nature from them, for elders have strayed far from that ideal. Instead of saying a hundred things, it is better to do one thing properly. Sanctify your life by doing selfless work. For the person who talks a lot, there is no time for work. Instead of wasting time in your words, use your time in service to mankind which is service to God, all the while repeating the name of the Lord.

持戒修行的人生,是你所能獻給國家或內在上帝最好的供品。

今天很多孩子都剛愎任性又惡劣,因為他們沒有別的典範可資效法。父母、師長、領導人物,很不幸的,都在煽動年幼的心靈、煽動他們的激情,鼓勵不當的行動。

成年人也要和Bala Vikas(沙迪亞.賽靈性教育和德育的兒童班;Bala:兒童)兒童們一樣,體驗到Vikas(開花、綻放、成長),過著簡樸、誠、修行不懈的生活,做一個典範。兒童不會說一套做一套,他們都是直截了當,天真無邪,成年人該向他們學習,成年人偏離這個理想太遠了。

與其說一百件事,不如好好做一件事。要從事無私的工作,來神聖化你的生命。講得太多的人,沒有時間去做,與其浪費時間空談,不如將時間用來服務人類──那就是服務神,並且一面服務,一面唸著神的聖名。

Prema and Seva (love and selfless service) are like a bird’s two wings for a man. Man can soar to any heights with those two wings. - Baba

Almost everyone in the world is bound by the rule of Karma (action). But people are so immersed in ignorance that they are unaware of their own moral or intellectual status and of the secrets of Karma. Such people can be saved only by being inspired by the example of the great. Pay attention to just one fact!  How warm is your body now? It may be about 98 degrees; how did it happen? Because the Sun bears many million times this heat at that distance, is it not? Now if the Sun feels that it will not put up with all that fire and becomes cool, what will happen to mankind? If God desists from action, imagine what will be the fate of this vast universe? The one of wisdom (Jnani) too needs to engage in activity, to remove the sloth and delusion of ordinary men. All have to obey the rule of Karma, without any deviation.

愛和無私服務,如鳥之雙翼,靠著這一對翅膀,人可以翱翔至任何高度。

幾乎每個人都受到業(行動)的法則束縛,可是人們如此無明,對自己品德和才智的程度,對行動的奧秘,渾然不知,這些人只有靠聖賢們的典範來啟發、激勵,才能挽救。光想想這一點︰你的體溫有多少?可能約有98度,怎麼發生的?因為太陽在遙遠的地方承受了幾百萬倍的熱,是不是?好,要是現在太陽不想再忍耐那種火燄而冷卻下來,人類會怎樣?要是上帝停止行動,宇宙會是什麼命運?解脫的智者也必須從事行動,以去除一般人的怠惰和妄見。業(行動)的法則,人人都得遵守不逾。

Just as fire is needed till the rice is cooked, so also the spiritual practices are needed till you realise the innate divinity. - Baba

Pranayama is the practice (sadhana) by which you hold your breath (prana). Its significance may be understood when we recognise that there are five different vital airs namely, prana, apana, vyana, udana and samana. The process by which these vital airs are controlled is called Pranayama and this gives inner vision. In Pranayama the three different kinds of stages are Rechaka (exhaling), Puraka (inhaling) and Kumbhaka (holding breath). Through Rechaka and Puraka one is able to get control over the various vital airs and take them in. Holding the airs (breath) during the process is kumbhaka. Along with this, Prathyahara, should be observed to attain bliss. The organs and the mind always wish to look at an d concern themselves with the external objects. The mind develops sensuous desires by looking at them. As a result of these desires, the mind becomes impure. Prathyahara consists in turning the mind inwards and away from the external objects.

在米煮熟之前,都需要火,同樣的,在你了悟內在神性之前,靈修也是必須的。

吐納(Pranayama)是一種守「氣」(Prana)的修行法,「氣」有五種︰prana, apana, vyana, udana, samana[註一],認清這些氣,就能了解這項修習法的意義。控制這些氣的方法,叫作吐納,它能讓人有對內在的認知。吐納的三個階段為呼氣、吸氣、閉息,透過呼氣和吸氣,能攝入各種氣,並加以控制,屏住呼吸叫作閉息(Kumbhaka),閉息時,要遵守Prathyahara,以便能達到靈性極樂之境。感官和心念總是向外界看,總是去關注外界,看了這些外界的東西,感官欲望於焉生起,這些欲望,使得心變得不純潔不清淨,Prathyahara就是將心轉向內在,遠離外界事物。

prana︰隨呼吸吸入身體之氣;

apana:下行而出身體之氣,負責體內廢物排泄;

vyana:遍行氣,遍佈全身,負責循環與神經系統等等

udana:上行而出身體之氣,在喉嚨部位運作,掌發聲、說話、唱歌,在死亡那一刻幫助靈魂脫離肉體;

samana:均衡氣,幫助消化,將養份輸送至全身。

Culture means giving up one's bad conduct, bad deeds and cultivating good thinking as well as fostering good sentiments that lead to good actions. - Baba

Does the airplane stay on above, denouncing the earth below? Those who have earned the right to travel in it cannot fly towards it! Therefore, to take them in, it has to come down at the places where they gather by previous arrangement, and then soar into the sky with them. So too, the spiritually evolved (Jnanis) who have no desire or urge to do Karma, come down and help those who would not make progress otherwise. The right way to perform action is to identify every aspect of the universe with the Universal Being and dedicate all acts unto Him. Always remember that one who is bound by the Deha-atma buddhi (the false idea that he is just this body and nothing more) can never win the game of life; one must acquire the Brahma-Atma-Buddhi (the awareness that he is Divine) to be sure of victory.

文化意謂拋棄自己壞的行為,培養好的思維、好的情操,以導致好的行動。

飛機難道一直留在天空,拒絕落地嗎?那些獲權搭乘它旅行的人,總不能飛上去搭吧?要讓這些乘客進來,飛機得降落到大家事先約定好的地點,然後載著他們高飛。同樣的,那些靈性層次很高的人(智者),雖然本身沒有從事行動的欲望或衝動,卻降臨世間,來幫助一些人,那些人除非這樣否則無法進步。

要視整個宇宙為上帝的形體,一切行動皆奉獻給祂。

囿於「吾即此身」這種錯誤觀念的人,人生是不會贏的;一定要有「吾乃梵(無所不在的上帝)也」的意識,才會贏得勝利。

Whoever loves and serves all, that person the Lord loves and honours. - Baba

What greater misfortune can there be than to cavil at others' faults and to be blind to one's own; to jeer at others' looks, not noticing one's own ugliness? To have such qualities from birth - can there be a greater sin than this?  Embodiments of love! The observance of morality in daily life, the divinisation of all actions and thoughts, and adherence to ideals - all these together constitute culture. Students today do not make the requisite efforts to understand the sacredness and value of this culture. Samskrit, Samskriti, Samskara are all terms which have been derived from the roots, Sam and Krit. Bharatiya Samskriti (Indian culture) is a composite of purity, divinity, sublimity and beauty; not of narrow-minded ideas and ideals. "Lokaa samasthaas-sukhino bhavanthu!" (May all beings everywhere be happy) is the benedictory motto of our sacred culture.

愛眾生,服務眾生者,主必愛他,榮耀他。

吹毛求疵,揭人短處,卻無視於自己的缺點;嘲笑別人的長像,卻不知自己的醜陋,還有什麼比這些更可悲的?還有什麼比天生就有這種醜陋性格更嚴重的罪?

各位愛的化身!在生活中,遵守道德,神聖化自己的行動和思維,堅持理想,這些合起來,構成文化。今日的學生,都沒有作必要的努力去了解這個(印度)文化的神聖性和價值。Samskrit, Samskriti, Samskara這些字都是從SamKrit兩個字根衍生而來,Bharatiya Samskriti(印度文化)乃是純潔清淨、神性、崇高和美的合成,而非狹隘心態的產物,像"Lokaa samasthaas-sukhino bhavanthu!" ──「願每個世界的所有眾生皆得喜樂。」這種祝禱文,才是印度文化的座右銘。

The treatment you wish others to render to you is the measure of your duty to them. - Baba

Everyone has to do action (Karma); if not the world itself will come to a nought. Everyone in the world is bound by the obligation of Karma. Wisdom (Jnana) is the final goal and gain of all Karma; wisdom is the treasure won by one's efforts to purify the mind and to earn the grace of God.  All are in you, you are in all. You must get this conviction fixed in your consciousness, by means of analysis, discrimination and intellectual exploration. Isolate and dismiss from your consciousness the impressions of the senses, the mind, the intelligence, etc. You must carry out every single act of yours with this wisdom (Jnana) as its background and conviction.

你希望別人如何對待你,就是你對他們有多少職責的一種量度標準。

人人都需要行動,否則整個世界都要變成零了,行動是每個人的職責。般若智慧是一切行動的最終目標和收穫,般若智慧是一個人努力淨化心念,得到上帝恩典,所贏得的寶藏。

萬物在你之內,你在萬物之內,一定要靠分析、明辨、智性探討,將這個信念固定於心中。要將感官所得之印象、心念、聰明才智、等等,從你的意識中隔離開來,加以摒除,這些和阿特曼無關,阿特曼才是你的本來面目。阿特曼不受任何主題或客體影響,即便感官、心念、聰明才智、等等沒有在活動,那種不動,也不會影響阿特曼。知道阿特曼是這樣一種不受影響、無所住的東西,乃是般若智慧的秘密。從事每一項行動,一定要抱持此般若智慧。

The whole world will prosper when students tread along the right path. - Baba

When studying in the primary classes many children conduct themselves with humility, discipline and goodness. However when they reach the Secondary School, they lose some of these qualities. When they go to college, almost everything is gone! Why? It is the teachers who account for their discipline and good behaviour in the Primary School. In the higher classes and in colleges, is anything done through precept and practice to promote character and spirituality among the students? Education is for developing right understanding. Work is for earning a living. Today, education is sought for getting a job; this is not proper.  Students should imbibe culture along with academic knowledge.

Of all the professions in the world, that of the teacher is the most estimable. The teacher has to impart to the students what is good and ennobling. This is the true relationship between teachers and students. This is what should be developed in our educational institutions.

一旦學生們走在正確的道路上,全世界都會欣欣向榮。

孩子們在小學時,行為舉止都顯出謙虛、紀律與善,到了初中高中,就失去了一部份這種品德,到了大學,幾乎統統沒了!為什麼會這樣?在小學裡,他們的紀律和良好行為,是因為老師的緣故。在高中和大學,師長們有在用言教和身教來提昇學生的品德和靈性嗎?教育是為了建立正確的知見,工作是為了謀生,今天,受教育變成是為了找份工作,這是不好的,除了吸收學術知識以外,學生也要吸收文化。

在所有的專業中,教師最值得尊敬。老師應該灌輸學生善和崇高的理念,這才是師生之間真正的關係,這才是該在我們的教育機構裡建立起來的東西。

The primary goal of a human being is to realise his inherent divinity and redeem his life by that realization. - Baba

The impressions of the senses, mind, and intelligence have nothing to do with the Atma (Divine Self), which you really are. The Atma is unaffected by any subject or object or pleasures. To know the Atma as such an entity, unaffected and unattached, is the secret of Jnana (Wisdom). This awareness will guide you in both the outward (Pravritti marga) and inward (Nivritti marga) paths. This knowledge will not block action but will fill it with purpose and meaning. It will build up faith, inspire a moral life and take man to the realm of deliverance along the road of Nishkama Karma, action that is not prompted by desires. For the achievement of liberation, Jnana is the direct road. Therefore, it is incomparably sacred. And naturally, it follows that ignorance is undoubtedly the most despicabl e. "See the Universal in the particular; see the particular in the Universal; that is the essence of Jnana," declared Krishna in the Geeta.

人的主要目標,是了悟他本有的神性,然後以這個澈悟,來救贖自己的生命。

感官所得之印象、心念、聰明才智,這些和阿特曼無關,阿特曼才是你的本來面目。阿特曼不受任何主觀或客觀快樂影響。知道阿特曼是這樣一種不受影響、無所住的東西,乃是般若智慧的秘密。從事每一項行動,一定要抱持此般若智慧,這樣的覺知,不論你走的是外向式的法門(譯注︰例如祭神、盡職責、無私服務)或是內向式的法門(譯注︰例如般若知識、哲學玄思、內觀),它都能提供指引。此般若智慧不會阻礙行動,反而會賦予行動目的和意義,它會建立起信心,啟發道德生活,帶人沿著Nishkama Karma(不帶欲望之行動)這條路子,走向了脫生死。

要了脫生死,般若智慧乃直接之路,因此它無比神聖,當然,這就表示「無明」乃卑劣之首。在《薄伽梵歌》裡,主克里希那說︰「要在『個別』中見到『同』,要在『同』中見到『個別』(要在多元中見到一,要在一裡見到多元),此乃般若智慧之精髓。
